Pontiac’s softball season ended in Peoria in a 3-1 loss to Peoria Notre Dame in regional play. The Indians were undone by three errors leading to two unearned runs.
Illinois basketball has signed graduate transfer Mark Alstork from Wright State, where he scored 19 points per game last season and earned first team honors in the Horizon League. Alstork is eligible immediately and has one year remaining.
Illinois State baseball knocked off top seed and host Missouri State in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The Redbirds face Wichita State tonight in the winner’s bracket.
Illinois Wesleyan softball opens play in the Division III World Series in Oklahoma City this afternoon against St. Catherine’s of Minnesota. First-year Titan coach Tiffany Prager hopes her team including 11 returning players learned from last year’s appearance in the national tournament, in which IWU suffered a quick two-game exit.
The CornBelters split a pair at Windy City, losing the opener 5-2 before rebounding for a 5-3 nightcap win in 10 innings. The series concludes tonight in Crestwood before the Belters return home this weekend for a three-game series with Lake Erie.
​The Cardinals trounced the Dodgers 6-1 as Mike Leake lowered his earned run average to under two, best in the majors, with eight strong innings. The series concludes tonight at Chavez Ravine as Michael Wacha takes the ball for the Cardinals against Kenta Maeda for the Dodgers.
The Cubs held off the Giants 5-4 as Anthony Rizzo homered twice. The teams rematch this afternoon at Wrigley Field as Jeff Samardzija starts on the mound for the Giants while the Cubs counter with Eddie Butler.
The White Sox lost at Arizona 8-6 as the Diamondbacks completed the sweep. The Sox have today off.
Liberty University won the inaugural National Invitational Softball Classic, but with controversy. Lamar scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning of the championship game to take a 5-3 lead, but the game was halted by rain with two outs in the bottom half of the inning and called only 19 minutes later, reverting the score to the previous inning and giving Liberty the tournament win on their own field.
