The CornBelters fell short to the Frontier League leaders as the Schaumburg Boomers completed a three-game sweep with a 6-3 win on Sunday at the Corn Crib. The Boomers surged out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth, but the Belters cut the deficit with all of their runs in seventh inning on a two-run homer by Craig Lepre and an RBI double from Santiago Chirino. Closer Shawn Blackwell made his first start but picked up his first loss to fall to 4-1. The Belters take Monday off before hosting Florence on Tuesday to begin a three-game series at the Corn Crib.

 

The Cubs beat the Pirates 7-1 as Anthony Rizzo hit his team-high 16th home run and was a triple short of a cycle. The Cubs host the Padres tonight with Jon Lester on the hill for the North Siders. Clayton Richard starts for San Diego.

 

The Cardinals hit four home runs on Sunday, but so did the Orioles as Baltimore took an 8-5 victory. Stephen Piscotty hit two of the four long balls for the Cardinals. The Redbirds are now a season-high six games below .500. It’s a day off today before the Cardinals visit Philadelphia tomorrow.

 

The White Sox lost 7-3 to the Blue Jays and north central Illinois native J.A. Happ as Toronto won for the first time in seven tries against Chicago. The Sox take today off before visiting Minnesota tomorrow.

Brooks Koepka registered three straight birdies on the back nine at Erin Hills and carded a final round five-under-par 67 to win the U.S. Open by four strokes over Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama. Koepka finished the tournament at 16-under par, tying an Open record.

 

Kyle Larson won the NASCAR race at Michigan, holding off Chase Elliott for his second Cup Series win of the season and third of his career. Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Jamie McMurray rounded out the top five.

 

Teachers will be able to see a free round of golf in Springfield this month. The Lincoln Land Charity Championship has named June 22 “Horace Mann Educator’s Day” at the Web.com PGA tournament. Any educator with proper identification will be admitted free that day.
