The CornBelters continue their homestand after Monday off tonight against the Florence Freedom with a 6:35 first pitch at the Corn Crib.
Today is the registration deadline for the State Farm Youth Classic, one of the largest youth golfing events in the nation. Boys and girls ages 3 through 22 can register for the State Farm Youth Classic’s 16th annual event which runs next Monday through Wednesday in Bloomington-Normal. ​Illinois State has quickly filled its head volleyball coach opening. The Redbirds have scheduled a news conference for tomorrow to introduce Leah Johnson as the program’s seventh head coach. She was a standout defensive specialist at Missouri State, then served as an assistant coach for the Bears. Johnson has been the head coach at SIU-Edwardsville for the past six seasons.
Central Catholic High School is expected to announce Hud Venerable as its new athletic director. He was a longtime football coach at Normal Community High School, leading the Ironmen to a state championship in 2006 before serving as coach and athletic director at Lincoln Way Central High School in New Lenox.
The Cardinals are back in action tonight in Philadelphia to begin a three-game series. Mike Leake takes the ball for the Cards against Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson.
The Cubs got a tying home run from Willson Contreras and a go-ahead ninth-inning run from Javier Baez on an error before Wade Davis escapted a ninth-inning jam for a 3-2 win over the Padres. The rematch tonight at Wrigley Field pits San Diego’s Jhoulys Chacin against Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery.
The White Sox return from a day off with the first of a three-game series at Minnesota. The Sox send lefty Derek Holland to the hill. The Twins counter with Ervin Santana.
