Emily Grove of Pontiac has qualified for the track and field World Championships in London later this summer. Grove, a senior at the University of South Dakota, earned the final spot on the USA roster when she won a tiebreaker in the pole vault (15 feet, 1 inch) at the the USA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, California. The World Championships are scheduled for Aug. 5-13 at Olympic Stadium.

The Cardinals lost a 9th inning lead on a homerun, then lost the game on a walkoff hit in the 10th by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chris Herrmann in the Cards’ 6-5 loss. 

The Cubs fell to the Nationals 6-1. Max Scherzer allowed one run and two hits and Cubs starter Jake Arrieta was chased in the fifth inning in a matchup of the past two NL Cy Young Award winners.

Jose Abreu hit a walkoff, two-run single in the 9th inning as the White Sox overcame the New York Yankees, 4-3.

The Normal CornBelters split a doubleheader with the Evansville Otters, winning the opener 8-2 but dropping the nightcap 4-3 on Tuesday at the Corn Crib. The series finale is at 1:30 this afternoon.

Former Illinois state offensive lineman Cameron Lee has signed as a rookie free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals. Lee had been invited to the New Orleans Saints training camp after the NFL Draft.

Illinois Wesleyan graduate Jack Sikma has been chosen for induction into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame in Evansville, Indiana in November. Sikma has a 7-time NBA All-Star and remains Wesleyan’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Illinois State senior Jaelyen Keene is joining a team of college volleyball players who will compete in the European Global Challenge in Croatia next month. The ream will visit 5 European countries on the trip.
