The Cubs lost 8-4 at Washington. John Lackey gave up eight runs in five-plus innings as the Cubs drop back to .500. The Cubs send lefty Jon Lester to the hill this afternoon in the series finale against Nationals right-hander Joe Ross.
Before the game, the Cubs designated veteran catcher Miguel Montero for assignment. He blamed pitcher Jake Arrieta for the Nationals’ seven stolen bases on Tuesday.

The CornBelters dropped the series finale to the Evansville Otters 9-6. The Belters stranded 17 runners. The Belters are off today as country star Toby Keith takes over the Corn Crib tonight. They visit Southern Illinois this weekend before beginning a six-game homestand on Tuesday.

A major league umpire is credited with helping save the life of a woman in Pittsburgh yesterday. John Tumpane was returning to his hotel from a run and spotted the woman on a bridge rail. He held onto her and talked with her until emergency personnel arrived, then worked home plate as the Pirates took on the Rays.
