A proposed football performance center at the University of Illinois has an expected cost of more than $79 million. The News-Gazette reports Senior Associate Vice President Mike Bass met with a UI Board of Trustees committee about funding for the project this week.​
The American League prevailed in last night’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game with a 2-1 win in 10 innings. Seattle’s Robinson Cano hit a solo home run off Cubs closer Wade Davis in the 10th for the win. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina homered for the National League’s only run while the Cards’ Carlos Martinez struck out four in his two innings.
Aaron Dudley of the CornBelters advanced to the second round of the Frontier League Home Run Derby, ending up with nine long balls. Jeff Gardner of Evansville hit 41 for the title. The Frontier League All-Star Game is tonight in Joliet with infielders Dudley and Santiago Chirino, catcher Craig Lepre and reliever Shawn Blackwell representing the CornBelters. Dudley and Chirino are in the West starting lineup.
Michael Jordan is a new investor in Derek Jeter’s bid to buy the Miami Marlins. The news comes a day after baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the former New York Yankees shortstop was among three investment groups seeking to buy the team.
Los Angeles and Paris have been given the green light to host the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games. Now all they have to do is decide which city hosts first.
