The fall high school sports seasons kick into an even higher gear this week as soccer and volleyball are added to the schedule mix. The high school football openers are this Friday night, and WJEZ 98.9 will feature Pontiac vs. Central Catholic from Williamson Field at 7:00 with Marc Strauss on the call.
Fighting Illini women’s soccer recorded a goal in the 88th minute from Patricia George for a 2-1 win over visiting DePaul. Lauren Ciesla registered the other Illini tally. Illinois State women’s soccer lost its home opener to Northwestern 3-0. ​
The Cubs scored a wild 6-5 win in 10 innings over the Blue Jays. Kyle Schwarber scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a strikeout, one of two in the inning. Alex Avila ended the game with a two-run single. The Cubs are off today before opening a series tomorrow at Cincinnati.
The White Sox edged the Rangers 3-2. Miguel Gonzalez threw six scoreless innings after getting out of early trouble. The Sox host the Twins in a twinbill today to make up a May 10 rainout. The Sox plan to start Carlos Rodon and Carson Fulmer on the mound. The Twins have not named their starters.
The Cardinals dropped a 6-3 decision to the Pirates in the Major League Baseball Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Bucs knocked Cardinals stater Mike Leake around for the six runs in three innings. The Cards take today off before hosting the Pirates tomorrow.
The CornBelters needed only a third-inning RBI single from Aaron Dudley to support a complete-game seven-hitter by Shawn Blackwell in a 1-0 win over the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday night in Sauget. The Belters take today off before continuing the road trip with four games in Evansville, starting with a doubleheader tomorrow to finish a suspended game from two weeks ago.
