Illinois State football has moved up three spots to No. 15 in the FCS coaches poll after their 45-0 season-opening win over Butler Saturday. ISU also ascended two spots to number 18 in the STATS FCS rankings . The Redbirds are next in action on Sept. 16 at Eastern Illinois.

 

Carlos Martinez went the distance on a 3-hit shutout striking out 10 padres as the Cardinals blanked San Diego 2-0. The Cards stay three games behind the Colorado Rockies in the National League wildcard race and move within five games of the Chicago Cubs for the NL Central lead.

 

The Cubs were shutout in Pittsburgh 12-0. Cubs ace Jake Arrieta left in the third inning with an apparent injury to his right leg.

 

The White Sox lost to Cleveland 5-3 as the Indians earned their major league season-high 12th consecutive victory.

 

The Diamondbacks  J.D. Martinez tied a major league record for homers in a game by going deep in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings in a 13-0 rout of the Dodgers.

 

Bears coach John Fox has named Mike Glennon the team’s starting quarterback and one of five captains on the quad. Fox hasn’t said whether rookie Mitchell Trubisky or mark Sanchez would be the second-string quarterback.

 

Bloomington’s hockey team, the Central Illinois Flying Aces, unveiled its new logos, jerseys, and color scheme while taking part in Bloomington’s Labor Day Parade. The red, white and navy blue jerseys feature a shark-tooth fighter plane.
