How to prevent common wintertime crimes

Certain crimes seem to be more prevalent when the weather gets colder, and Livingston County State’s Attorney Randy Yedinak says people need to be proactive so they don’t become victims.

“We tend to see a lot more car burglaries, and it’s a lot because of individuals starting their car up, get it warming while it’s outside. It hasn’t been that cold lately, but it’s getting to that point, and what we see a rise in is people leaving their cars unlocked for whatever reason, and individuals get in the cars, rifling around, stealing electronics, loose change – whatever they can get their hands on that would be worth some money. I talk to people a lot about crime prevention and what they can do. That’s something we deal with. I’d say out of 100 car burglaries we have 99 cars were not locked. They were wide open and people could just take whatever they want. Just a word of caution, I urge people to ensure you lock your cars, lock your doors at your house, otherwise they can make themselves an easy victim,” Yedinak said.
