In high school basketball last night, Pontiac’s girls edged Olympia 52-50 at Stanford, behind 23 points from Addison Masching. Dwight lost at Cissna Park 51-31. Fieldcrest crushed Midland 50-27, Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland fell at Tremont 52-42, Lexington scored a 58-34 win at Tri-Valley. El Paso-Gridley came out on top at LeRoy 37-28. Eureka downed Ridgeview 51-35.

 

The Fighting Illini host Rutgers in Big Ten play tonight. The Illini are seeking their second league win. Pregame at 5 p.m. on WJEZ.

 

Illinois State men’s basketball visits Missouri State tonight in a matchup of 5-5 teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds are 11-11 overall.

 

For the fourth time this season, Illinois State junior Milik Yarbrough has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week. Yarbrough averaged 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game in a 1-1 week for the Redbirds.

 

Jason Day won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in a six-hole sudden death playoff over Alex Noren.

 

The Cleveland Indians are doing away with their smiling Chief Wahoo mascot after next season. Major League Baseball had been pressing the franchise to do away with the logo that some Native American groups have protested. But the Indians will still sell the logo on some merchandise.
