In high school softball, Pontiac held Tri-Valley to two hits in a 3-0 win. The Indians improve to 2-0 and take on Dwight on Friday afternoon. Lexington routed Midland, 20-1.
In baseball, Lexington downed Midland, 12-4. GCMS had no trouble with Ridgeview, 19-5.
Pontiac’s Carter Dawson and Streator’s Joey Byers both missed the cut in the preliminary round of the Country Financial 3-point showdown at Carver Arena in Peoria. The top four of 32 shooters advanced. Dawson hit 8 three pointers and Byers nailed 5.
It was the latest magic moment in March Madness. Loyola’s Donte Ingram nailed a long 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and give them Ramblers their first NCAA Tournament win in 33 years, 64-62, over favored Miami in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Dallas. Loyola will play Tennessee in the second round on Saturday.
Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood says redshirt junior forward Leron Black plans to give up his final year of eligibility and turn pro. Black was the leading Illini scorer with 15.3 points per game as well as the top rebounder with 5.2 boards per contest.
The Chicago Bulls got two free throws in the final seconds from Antonio Blakeney to hand the Memphis Grizzlies their 19th straight loss, 111-110.
