LifeCIL Wheelchair Basketball happening Saturday

The Life Center for Independent Living, with offices in McLean and Livingston counties, is having its 10th anniversary Wheelchair Basketball game Saturday at Kingsley Junior High in Normal with doors opening at 10 a.m.

Transportation Specialist Shannon Tarkowski describes how the games will work.

“We have the U of I Wheelchair Basketball Team. They’re actually really excellent players. It’s both men’s and women’s teams that come together that come play a home team here against people in our community that actually use their wheelchairs who haven’t used them before. It’s kind of fun to see the disparity between these people who have played wheelchair basketball all their lives versus our people here from our community,” Tarkowski said.

Tarkowski explains why they have this event, which doubles as a fundraiser.

“Life Center for Independent Living, or LifeCIL – we’re a non-profit and our goal is to help people with disabilities live as independently as possible. So, the wheelchair basketball game is our largest fundraiser each year and the purpose is to raise awareness of what people with disabilities can do and to be inclusive in society,” Tarkowski said.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the Pontiac office, located at 318 W. Madison Street.
