Pontiac hosted the 40th Livingston County Open track meet on Tuesday. The Ridgeview-Lexington co-op’s reigning Class 1A state champion 800-meter relay team won its event. One of the relay runners, Tate Walcott also finished first in the 100 and 200-meter runs and the long jump. Teammate and state champion Mason Barr defended his title in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Ridgeview’s Jayden Standish defended his title in the discus.
In softball, Dwight no-hit Clifton Central 15-0 in five innings. Abby Edwards went the district with seven strikeouts for the Trojans’ no-no.
In baseball, Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell shutout Peoria Christian, 1-0. Collin Hjerpe tossed the shutout with six strikeouts and no walks. Dwight was shutout at home by Watseka, 6-0.
Ex-Illinois State Redbird Paul DeJong homered during a three-run eighth inning to help pad the St. Louis Cardinals’ lead in a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on a cold night at Wrigley Field. Snow is in the forecast for this afternoon’s finale.
The Chicago White Sox gave up five first-inning runs, as Jed Lawrie went deep on his 34th birthday to lead to the Oakland A’s to a 10-2 rout of the Sox.
Illinois State baseball gave up five runs in the 10th inning in a 7-2 loss to SIU-Edwardsville.
Illinois State men’s basketball is headed to the Cayman Islands south of Cuba in November. The Redbirds will join seven other teams in the second annual Cayman Islands Classic scheduled for Nov. 19-21. Tournament organizers announced the field Tuesday. NCAA tournament qualifiers from last season Clemson, Creighton, Georgia State and Saint Bonaventure are in the field, joined by NIT entry Boise State, Georgia with new coach Tom Crean, and Akron. Brackets will be announced later.
