Thursday was a light day on the local diamonds, thanks in part to the weather. In baseball, Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell crushed Ridgeview, 12-1, in six innings.

 

Streator took sixth place in the Interstate Eight Conference met at Seneca. Sandwich was the winner.

 

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals meet in St. Louis for a three-game series this weekend.

 

Trayce Thompson’s walkoff homerun led the White Sox to a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. The Sox rallied from a four-run deficit to snap a four-game losing skid.

 

Illinois State will host NCAA Tournament team San Diego State in the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge on Dec. 1.

 

Illinois State all-time great Sade Sealy was among 10 student-athletes named to the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Track 25-Year Team. It marks 25 years the Valley has sponsored women’s sports.

 

The 144th Kentucky Derby will be held tomorrow at historic Churchill Downs. This year’s favorite is Justify at 3-1 odds. The Southern California-based horse is trained by four-time Derby winner Bob Baffert.

 

Training camp is open at the Corn Crib as the Normal CornBelters prepare for their ninth Frontier League season. The CornBelters’ regular season opens next Friday at the Corn Crib against Traverse City.
