Ridgeview-Lexington’s Mason Barr and Tate Walcott both won two events to lead Ridgeview to the Class 1A Gibson City Sectional championship. Barr won the 110 high hurdles (14.93) and 300 intermediate hurdles (39.53). Walcott was tops in the 200-meter dash (22.57 seconds) and the long jump (23 feet, 5¾ inches). The Mustangs also won the 800 and 1,600 relays.

 

For the girls, Ridgeview’s 4×200 relay team advanced to the state finals at Charleston this weekend along with Cate Atkins from El Paso-Gridley who qualified for state in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.

 

In the high school baseball regionals, El Paso-Gridley fell to Tremont 4-0 in the Class 2A Eureka Regional, Lexington bowed out of the Class 1A Regional at Peoria Heights in a 10-2 loss to Peoria Christian.

 

Illinois State men’s basketball coach Dan Muller called it an unbelievably selfless act. Junior guard Matt Hein volunteered to give up his scholarship for next season to help ISU add transfer Keith Fisher III, one of six newcomers for the Redbirds next season.

 

The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves series finale in Atlanta was rained out. It will be made up on Aug. 30. The Cubs are in Cincinnati on Friday night.

 

The Chicago White Sox rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to top Texas 4-2.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals lost the opener to their home stand 6-2 to the Phillies. Luke Weaver took the loss despite allowing just one run in seven innings. Before the game, the cardinals put catcher Carson Kelly on the 10-day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Pitcher Adam Wainwright was moved to the 60-day DL after he reaggravated his elbow in his last start on Sunday. 

 

The Normal CornBelters were shutout at Lake Erie 2-0 for their fifth straight loss.

 

Illinois State baseball is in Evansville for the final weekend of the regular season.  The first game with the Aces was halted in the bottom of the fourth inning due to weather with the Aces leading 5-1.  The game will resume Friday at noon and the second game of the series will follow 35 minutes after the completion of the first game.
