PONTIAC – Pontiac Township High School is working to make sure every student is prepared with the skills they need to succeed after graduation, even if they aren’t attending college.

Due to the state’s new evidence-based funding formula for schools, Pontiac District 90 Superintendent Jon Kilgore said the school was able to bring in a Career Services position that will work with departments and students to prepare the young adults to work after they toss their graduation caps into the air. Kilgore told WJEZ’s Todd Wineburner students need to be able to reach out to potential employers with confidence after they graduation.

“We want to start helping promote our students and their marketable skills in the workplace, and in college career preparation programs as well, by adding that position,” Kilgore explained.

Kilgore said parents used to expect their children to attend college after high school, but things have changed and more students are entering the workforce after high school. He explained this was one of the reasons why District 90 was looking to add a position that prepared students for those windows of opportunity.

“We need to prepare students for all types of skills that happen after high school and career opportunities,” said Kilgore. “We want everybody to be prepared for that post secondary opportunity, whatever that may be.”
