A Streator man was sentenced to natural life in prison for First Degree Murder Friday.

According to a press release from Livingston County State’s Attorney Seth Uphonff, David Stayton was convicted on the charges stemming from the August 2015 incident where he held Samuel Murphy and Linda Vega captive in Murphy’s Long Point home, resulting in a stand-off with law enforcement and ultimately resulting in Stayton fatally shooting Murphy.

Uphoff was quoted as saying “There is nothing that we can do to bring back Sam, but today we have ensured that the defendant can never do anything like this again.”

Under Illinois Truth in Sentencing laws, Stayton will be required to serve 100% of his sentence.
