Former Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has died. Summitt had been in declining health and stepped down as head coach of the Volunteers in 2012 with early onset dementia associated with Alzheimers’. She won more games than anyone in Division I women’s basketball. She was 64.
Longtime NFL coach Buddy Ryan has died. He was the defensive coordinator of the Bears Super Bowl XX champions and head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles during his 35-year NFL career. Ryan was 82.
The Royals scored all of their runs in the first two innings in a 6-2 win over the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright surrendered all of the tallies and took the loss. The series continues tonight in Kansas City with right-handers Michael Wacha and Yordano Ventura on the mound. Cardinals network pre-game on WJBC-AM 1230 is at 6:20.
The Cubs outslugged the Reds 11-8 behind a record-setting night from Kris Bryant, who became the first player in the modern era to hit three home runs and two doubles in the same game. His 16 total bases is a Cubs record and he’s the youngest player to hit three homers in a game. The rematch is tonight in Cincinnati. Lefty pitchers Jon Lester and John Lamb start.
The White Sox had Monday off as they open a series with the Twins tonight at U.S. Cellular Field. Right-hander Kyle Gibson seeks his first win of the season for the Twins and lefty Jose Quintana starts for the Sox.
The CornBelters took Monday off and open a three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums tonight at the Corn Crib. It’s on WJBC.com with pre-game at 6:20.
The Chiefs lost at Beloit 6-4.
Former Normal West and Illinois State pitcher Brock Stewart has received the call. He is set to make his major league debut tomorrow with the Dodgers at Milwaukee.
Normal West coach April Schermann has been named the Illinois Softball Coaches Assocaitions sectional coach of the year. Schermann led the Wildcats to a Class 4A second place finish this season.
Jason Day is the latest golfer to say he’s not going to the Rio Olympics because of concerns over the Zika virus.
