U-High won a boys golf quadrangular over Central Catholic, Mahomet-Seymour and Pontiac.
The CornBelters were eliminated from a chance at post-season play with an 8-3 loss to Evansville. The series finale against the Otters is tonight at the Corn Crib with a 6:20 pre-game on WJBC.com. The CornBelters will conclude the season at home this weekend against the Florence Freedom with games Friday night and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The Chiefs doubled up Beloit 8-4.
Illinois State volleyball lost the home opener in straight sets to St. Louis. The Redbirds visit Missouri for a weekend tournament.
All of the Brewers runs came on one swing, a three-run homer in the third inning by Kirk Nieuwenhuis off rookie Luke Weaver, and the Brewers beat the Cardinals 3-1. The Cardinals have today off and are in Cincinnati this weekend.
The Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the Pirates with a 6-5 victory. Kris Bryant hit his 36th homer. The Cubs were 22-6 in August, their best month in more than 70 years. The Cubs host the Giants tonight as Jeff Samardzija is on the mound for San Francisco against Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery.
The White Sox fell in Detroit 3-2 as the Tigers completed a series sweep. Tyler Collins drove in the winner with a sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Sox are in Minnesota tonight as Jose Quintana starts for the South Siders and Ervin Santana goes for the Twins.
The Illinois High School Association is proposing limits on how many pitches a high school baseball pitcher can throw in a game and how much rest they must receive between appearances. An advisory committee has proposed capping pitchers at 115 pitches a day and requiring four days rest before they could pitch again. The IHSA board of directors is expected to consider the limits in October.
