After discussion of the fate of the Camp Humiston Pool at Chautauqua Park drew concern from residents of Pontiac and the surrounding area, Pontiac City Administrator Bob Karls addressed some questions people had.
Karls said in 2003, the city brought an engineering consultant to do an evaluation of the pool. The main desire at that time was to rehab the pool to preserve it. The consultants concluded that over the years, the impact of the continual flooding had taken its toll and it would have to be rebuilt. Because of the flood plain regulations, Karls said that was not possible.
“We’ve heard just recently, that all the pools of this vintage, none of them are operating now,” Karls said. “It’s not because of the desire not to operate them, it’s just they’ve outlived their usefulness, the change of codes and add on the flood plain issues – they’re just not possible to operate.”
Since that conclusion, the City has been working to recognize the historic and sentimental significance to the community.
